STM32CubeIDE
also: STM32CubeMX · STM32Cube
STMicroelectronics' free IDE for STM32 microcontrollers, combining pin and clock configuration, code generation, build, and debugging.
STM32CubeIDE combines STM32CubeMX-style configuration (pinout, clocks, peripherals, and middleware) with code generation based on ST's HAL and low-layer libraries, a GCC toolchain, and debugging. It is the default starting point for many STM32-based products.
Where it bites: regenerating code after a configuration change overwrites anything written outside the designated user sections; HAL abstractions cost speed and memory; and builds tied to the IDE need extra work to run in continuous integration.
Outside help is worth it for board bring-up, low-power design, bootloader, and update architecture, and moving firmware builds into reproducible command-line and CI pipelines.
Common requests
- Pin, clock, and peripheral configuration
- Bring-up of new boards
- Low-power modes and sleep current
- Bootloader and OTA design
- CI and command-line builds
Founder takeaway
Keep generated code and your own code cleanly separated, and make the firmware build reproducible outside the IDE.
