SEGGER J-Link and Ozone
also: J-Link · Ozone debugger · RTT
Widely used debug probes (J-Link) and debugger (Ozone) for programming and debugging microcontrollers over JTAG and SWD.
J-Link probes connect a PC to a target microcontroller for flashing and debugging and are supported by most embedded IDEs. Ozone is SEGGER's standalone debugger with trace and profiling, and Real-Time Transfer (RTT) gives fast logging without a UART. Production programmers are available for the factory.
Where it bites: license terms differ between probe models (educational models are not licensed for commercial use), and production boards need accessible debug pads during development and a locked debug port when shipped.
Outside help is worth it for bring-up of new boards, chasing hard faults and timing bugs, and designing production programming flows.
Common requests
- Debug setup and board bring-up
- Production programming flows
- Real-time logging and tracing
- Debugging hard faults and timing issues
Founder takeaway
Buy a commercially licensed probe for product work, and design the factory programming flow alongside the debug setup.
