FreeRTOS
also: FreeRTOS kernel
Small, widely used MIT-licensed real-time kernel for microcontrollers, with optional libraries for networking and IoT connectivity.
FreeRTOS provides task scheduling, queues, semaphores, and timers in a small footprint and has been ported to many processor architectures; many chip vendors' SDKs include it. Additional libraries cover TCP/IP, MQTT, OTA updates, and more.
Where it bites: it is a kernel, not a full platform, so drivers, file systems, and update mechanisms come from vendor SDKs or other libraries, and concurrency bugs such as priority inversion and stack overflows need design discipline and debugging tools.
Outside help is worth it for task architecture and timing analysis, chasing intermittent crashes, porting to a new microcontroller, and integrating networking and OTA updates.
Common requests
- Task architecture and timing analysis
- Debugging stack overflows and race conditions
- Porting to a new microcontroller
- Integrating networking, MQTT, and OTA
Founder takeaway
Enable stack-overflow checking and runtime statistics during development; they catch most FreeRTOS problems early.
