FreeCAD
also: FreeCAD 1.0
Free, open-source parametric 3D CAD for parts, assemblies, and drawings; no license cost, but a steeper learning curve than commercial tools.
FreeCAD is a free and open-source (LGPL) parametric modeler with workbenches for part design, sketching, assemblies, technical drawings, finite element analysis, and CAM. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and can be scripted in Python.
Where it bites: workflows differ from commercial CAD, models historically broke when earlier features changed (the "topological naming" problem, which recent versions address in part), and suppliers will usually want STEP files and conventional drawings.
Outside help is worth it when preparing FreeCAD designs for manufacturing, producing supplier drawings, or moving a design into a commercial CAD system as the team grows.
Common requests
- Preparing FreeCAD models and STEP files for suppliers
- Moving a design into commercial CAD
- Drawings for manufacturing
- Scripting repetitive design tasks
Founder takeaway
FreeCAD is fine for early design; before tooling, make sure drawings and STEP files meet what your suppliers expect.
