Onshape

also: Onshape CAD

Cloud-native 3D CAD that runs in a web browser, with built-in version control and real-time collaboration on parts, assemblies, and drawings.

Onshape is a browser-based parametric CAD system owned by PTC. Models live in the cloud rather than in local files, and version history, branching and merging, and simultaneous editing are built in, which suits distributed teams and founders working with outside engineers.

Where it bites: work depends on an internet connection and the vendor's cloud; models are exchanged with other CAD tools through STEP or Parasolid; and some specialized workflows rely on partner apps. On the free plan, documents are public, so confidential designs need a paid plan.

Outside help is worth it for setting up document structure, part numbering, and a release workflow, preparing manufacturing drawings, and reviewing models for manufacturability.

Common requests

  • Document structure, versions, and release workflow
  • Manufacturing drawings and STEP exports
  • DFM review of parts and assemblies
  • Migrating from desktop CAD
