Ignition (Inductive Automation)

also: Ignition SCADA · Ignition Perspective

Web-based SCADA, HMI, and IIoT platform licensed per server rather than per tag or client, popular for plant dashboards and integrations.

Inductive Automation

Ignition connects to PLCs and devices through drivers, OPC UA, and MQTT modules, and to SQL databases, and provides HMI and SCADA screens (including web and mobile through Perspective), alarming, historian, and reporting. Scripting is in Python syntax running on the Java platform. Server-based licensing makes it attractive for adding many screens and users.

Where it bites: module costs, architecture decisions (gateway networks, redundancy, historian sizing) that are hard to change later, and security configuration when exposing screens beyond the plant.

Outside help is worth it for device connectivity, screen and dashboard design, historian and reporting setup, and gateway architecture and security reviews.

Founder takeaway

Design Ignition's gateway architecture and tag structure before building screens; screens are easy to change, architecture is not.
