Hardware-independent IEC 61131-3 development system used by many PLC and controller makers; lets custom hardware run standard PLC programs.
CODESYS provides IEC 61131-3 programming, a runtime that device makers port to their own hardware, fieldbus support (such as EtherCAT, PROFINET, Modbus, and CANopen), visualization and safety options. Many controller brands are built on it. For a hardware company, adding a CODESYS runtime can make a custom controller programmable by automation engineers using familiar tools.
Where it bites: runtime licensing per device, the engineering effort to port and certify the runtime on new hardware, and keeping runtimes updated for security.
Outside help is worth it for runtime porting, fieldbus configuration, application development, and planning licensing and deployment.
