AWS IoT Core

also: AWS IoT

Amazon's managed service for connecting devices to the cloud over MQTT, with device identity, message routing rules, and links to other AWS services.

Devices authenticate (typically with X.509 certificates), publish and subscribe over MQTT or HTTPS, and rules route messages to other AWS services; device shadows hold reported and desired state, and related services handle fleet provisioning, jobs such as firmware updates, and device management.

Where it bites: per-message and connection pricing at fleet scale, policy complexity, lock-in to one cloud's APIs, and getting certificates into devices securely in the factory.

Outside help is worth it for fleet provisioning, topic and shadow design, OTA jobs, cost modeling, and migrations between IoT platforms.

Common requests

  • Fleet provisioning and certificates
  • MQTT topic and shadow design
  • OTA update jobs
  • Cost modeling at fleet scale
  • Migrating between IoT clouds
