Open-source electronics platform of boards, IDE, and libraries; the fastest way to prototype, rarely the right way to ship production firmware unchanged.
Arduino boards, the Arduino IDE, and its simple C++ framework let people build working prototypes quickly, backed by a huge library ecosystem. The framework also runs on many non-Arduino chips such as ESP32, STM32, and nRF parts.
Where it bites: prototypes built on development boards and community libraries usually lack production features (power management, robust error handling, watchdogs, secure updates, test hooks); library quality and licenses vary; and turning a prototype into a manufacturable product usually means a custom PCB and re-architected firmware.
Outside help is worth it at exactly that transition: custom board design, firmware restructuring, and hardening for the field.
Common requests
- Turning an Arduino prototype into a custom PCB
- Re-architecting prototype firmware for production
- Power, watchdog, and OTA hardening
- Library license review
Founder takeaway
Treat an Arduino build as a works-like prototype; budget for a custom board and production firmware before launch.
